Lyrical Abstracts

Lyrical Abstracts is a collection of architectural abstract images of Houston’s Lyric Garage. In an earlier post, I included 2 images of the Lyric. Both, are a traditional composition. Accordingly, each is shot from the corner and include the entire building. Additionally, one was taken during the day and one in early evening. The difference was that in the daylight, the white façade stands out from the surroundings. At night the computer-controlled LED create a moving light show.

While I like both of these images there is more to the Lyric than what you see in those traditional compositions. As I promised in that post, I’ve created a collection of architectural abstracts that highlight some of the beauty in the detail of this wonderful structure.

Abstracts Are Not Easy

Creating abstracts isn’t easy. As a result we often end up shooting the traditional composition. It is in our “comfort zone”. This is because it more closely matches what we scene when we take in the entire scene. Additionally, abstracts can be confusing. We don’t always know what it is we are looking at. They may not even be oriented “correctly”. To create an abstract, we have to stop and think about the scene. What are the individual components that work together to create the grand vision?

However, if we look for all the various pieces that attract our eye to the scene, we can find our abstract subjects. As you might expect, this takes practice. We have to “relax our mind” and simply look. The details will reveal themselves if we let them. It’s not easy. As a result, I constantly struggle with this concept. However, it is worth the effort.

So, with all that, here are my Lyrical Abstracts. Just click on them to see a larger version. I hope you enjoy them.
