Gothic And Baroque Churches

Gothic and Baroque churches and palaces are a very common sight in both Prague and Vienna. They are beautiful reminders of their city’s history. They are so ubiquitous that after awhile they become less exciting. Nonetheless, the beauty is amazing and when you think of the effort that went into building them, you are in awe. The palaces had a certain “sameness” to them and I like churches so, that’s where I took photos.

Gothic architecture was popular from the 12th to 16th century. It is characterized by high buildings, intricate details, and cavernous spaces. Think spires, high vaulted ceilings, pointed stained glass windows and of course, buttresses (sometimes flying). Westminster Abbey in London and Notre Dame in Paris are probably the most familiar examples. In the US, most of the old large stone churches are Gothic architecture even though the are relatively recent. I’m guessing this is because of our English roots.

Baroque architecture spanned the late 16th through 17th century. It’s a highly ornate and elaborate style which may be an significant understatement. In churches it usually involves a lot of gold feature and marble. Personally, I found much of it to be gaudy or “over the top”. However, it does have its beauty and my reaction may simply be liking that which you are most familiar with.

St. Stephan’s Cathedral – Vienna, Austria

St. Stephan’s Cathedral is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Vienna. With its beautiful Gothic architecture it serves as the main attraction in the Stephansplatz in the center of Vienna.

On the south side of the cathedral I came across these two trees sharing a very small patch of ground next to the cathedral wall. Despite the less than optimal growing conditions they seem to be thriving. I was fortunate enough to be there at the right time for some lovely autumn color.

Another beautiful example of Gothic Architecture is St. Vitus Cathedral. Located in the center of Prague Castle, St. Vitus is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Prague.

The day I visited St. Vitus I was fortunate to have sunlight backlighting the beautiful stained glass windows.

Baroque Churches

A little Baroque architecture goes a long way with me. In a contest between Gothic and Baroque churches there is no doubt I’d pick Gothic. However, I still find Baroque architecture fascinating. Here are two of my favorites. Both are from Prague.
