The Woodlands

“The Woodlands” is not what you’re probably thinking. The Woodlands I’m referring to is a special-purpose district north of Houston called “The Woodlands”. It’s a very nice area with a population in excess of 115,000. But it isn’t “the woods” although it is in an area that was such at one time. Despite, the development there are still lots of trees and natural areas. They’ve worked hard to keep things as natural as possible in a developed area. I thought I’d clarify this as the photos I’m presenting in this post are about The Woodlands but not the woods. Does this make any sense? My apologies for any confusion.

It was a beautiful day, my schedule was free and I was anxious to get out and continue practicing with my new camera. So, here are the shots. For the most part they are architectural in nature. That’s why I wanted to clarify the term “The Woodlands”. I did capture some trees but none are “about” trees.

The Photos

– The Grand Shot

The only planned shot I had was to shoot along The Woodlands Waterway. The Waterway meanders slowly through the commercial area where there are lots of hotel, office buildings and restaurants. I picked this location because it also means there are architectural targets of opportunity. I started with a wide shot looking down the waterway.

After the “grand vista” I decided to concentrate on shooting architectural detail shots. I only had to walk a few yards when I noticed “Angel Wings” on the other side of the Waterway. Angel Wings is an commissioned art bench made by Jim Weitzel. If you look closely in the shot above you can see this on the left side. Although this wasn’t really a mere detail I felt the need to shoot it anyway. The Woodlands, Texas is home to one of the largest collections of public art in Texas. They have a thing about art benches with 30+ art benches throughout the community.

– The Detail Shots

For the detail shots I looked for a combination of lines, shapes and shadows. I was fortunate and didn’t have to look all that hard.
