Seattle Public Library
I had heard that the Seattle Public Library – Central Library was a very distinctive and unique building. I thought I’d check it out as I love distinctive and unique buildings. However, distinctive and unique doesn’t always mean photogenic. As I approached the building it just didn’t seem that appealing to me. Maybe it was the weather, maybe it was the light, maybe it was just me. In terms of an overall photo of the building, it just wasn’t working for me.
That doesn’t mean there weren’t good photos to be had though. Getting up close with the building I could see lots of potential for architectural abstract shots. Likewise, when we stepped inside it was a whole other experience. So I have to say, yes, the building is distinctive and unique. However, don’t just look at it or judge it by its exterior.
“Art Is In All The Details”
Visual artist and composer, Christian Marclay, has be quoted as saying “Art is in all the details.” In terms of the Seattle Public Library, I’d have to say he is spot on. When you look at the building as whole it is a overwhelming mass dominating the scene. It hard to take it all in.
However, when you look at the smaller details that make up the building your perspective changes. You can see how these details, the lines and shapes, interact and connect with the scene’s other elements. This all happens both literally in a structural sense but also visually across all the elements. This, in turn, creates a potential for some interesting architectural abstracts.

The library’s interior structural elements also make for great abstracts.
Beauty On The Inside
I was surprised to find out how beautiful the inside of the Seattle Public Library is. I’ve never seen a library like this before. The library is very open and beautiful. Natural light just fills the building. It definitely doesn’t have the traditional book warehouse vibe that may libraries do.
I especially liked the area on Level 3 called the “Living Room”. It’s a comfortable reading area and an eating area to have a snack. It’s clear it was designed to make people want to come to the library.
The Seattle Public Library is also the first building I’ve ever seen that has interior overlooks. To be honest, it may be one of the first buildings that really has an need for them. They provide some amazing views.
People At The Library
Libraries draw people of all types and ages. Because of this, it also makes it a great place for some indoor “street” photography. Couple this with an interesting background such as at the Seattle Public Library and you have great combination.
